Der Katzen-Raphael. XII Blatter Katzengruppen von Gottfried Mind nebst kurzer Nachricht von dessen Leben (The Raphael of Cats. 12 Plates of Cat Groups by Gottfried Mind along with a brief Biography of his Life), 2 vol.), Gerhard Fleischer (German or Swiss), Schroeder:Leipzig, 1827. lithographic and engraved prints, ink on paper, 12-3/4 x 10-1/4 and 11-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches.
Katzen Raphael is actually a collection of twelve engraved prints of Mind’s works by various engravers. There is also a short biography of Mind, and a novelette based on an imaginary version of Mind’s life by a Franz Freiherrn Gaudy. Gerhard Fleischer was a writer for the German art journal, Kunstblatt. Astonishingly, much is known of Gottfried Mind’s life; there are typically littleor no record of peasant life, especially children, and even more especially children who were “unusual” (handicapped) in any way, but the Mind record is surprisingly complete. This is likely due to the immensity of his talent. On the other hand, we know very little about Gerhard Fleischer, other than he wrote about Mind in the September 6, 1827 issue of Kunstblatt.
